~THE IGNITION INTERLOCK DEVICE~
The Ignition Interlock Device is installed in your vehicle to determine whether you have alcohol in your system prior to turning on the ignition to your car. If you do have alcohol in your system your car will not start – you can then try and start the car 20 minutes later (you will still need to blow into the device and give a negative reading). This device may be necessary if you are convicted of DUI in Skagit County or Bellingham or, if you have a 2nd DUI that was amended to a lesser offense or, if you have lost your license and have applied for an Ignition Interlock License or, if you have Petitioned the Court for Deferred Prosecution or finally, if the Judge orders you to install an Ignition Interlock Device following your release from jail or your arraignment in either Skagit County District Court or any of the local Municipal Courts.
An Ignition Interlock functions like a breathalyzer. The device reads the breath as it is blown onto the sensor and returns a measurement of your blood alcohol content. Importantly, the system is not perfect. Many interlock companies advertise “fuel cell” technology and claim not to have false positive readings. It is critical to know that some medications, beverages, mouthwashes, and other consumables can cause a false reading for alcohol content in police breath tests, so why assume it is any different with an interlock system?
To be on the safe side wait at least 20 to 30 minutes after eating or drinking any beverages before attempting to use the ignition interlock device. Don't risk a bad reading because you may be placed into custody because of it. Mouthwash is potentially problematic because there is alcohol in most brands, so avoid using mouthwash immediately prior to driving.
